Al Sharpton is very concerned that our tax dollars are going to funding the Jefferson Memorial, so he’s calling for it to be defunded.
MSNBC host and Civil rights activist Al Sharpton not only advocated for Confederate statues to be removed, but to halt federal funding of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. It is managed by the National Park Service under its National Mall and Parks Division.
Why? Because Thomas Jefferson wasa Democrat and owned slaves.
During his interview with Rose, Sharpton said that he doesn’t want his tax dollars to support monuments honoring even men who owned slaves. Specifically, he mentioned the monstrous Thomas Jefferson memorial in Washington D.C.
“This is personal to us. My great grandfather was a slave in South Carolina,” Sharpton said. “People need to understand that people were enslaved.”
“Public monuments [to people like Jefferson] are supported by public funds,” Sharpton said. “You’re asking me to subsidize the insult to my family.”
Sharpton made his announcement not long after President Trump asked (sarcastically) during a press conference “Are we going to take down statues to George Washington? How about Thomas Jefferson?”
Instead of placing them prominently in society, Sharpton suggested the monuments be placed in private museums.
