Chechnya has become a place of open genocide, particularly against the gay community (LGBT). The families of gay men allegedly being held in detention camps in predominantly Muslim Republic of Chechnya (Chechnya is almost 95 percent Muslim) are reportedly being encouraged to kill their gay sons ― and according to survivors, many are complying.
Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov, has allegedly vowed to eliminate the gay community by the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on May 26.
“He has carried out other violent campaigns in the past, and this time he is directing his efforts at the LGBT community,” Sir Alan Duncan, the minister of state for Europe and the Americas at the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office, told members of British Parliament. Duncan was the first openly gay Conservative Member of Parliament, having publicly come out in 2002.
Speaking about the recent round of arrests in Chechnya, Mr Duncan told Parliament:
‘The actions in these reports are utterly barbaric. One of the most disgusting things I have seen is a Chechen security source stating that these arrests are part of what he called a preventative clean-up.’ ‘Human rights groups report that these anti-gay campaigns and killings are orchestrated by the head of the Chechen republic, Ramzan Kadyrov. ‘He has carried out other violent campaigns in the past, and this time he is directing his efforts at the LGBT community.
Last month, the Moscow-based newspaper Novaya Gazeta and LGBT activists revealed that “more than 100 men” confirmed or suspected of being gay had been sent to prison camps for homosexuals in Chechnya where they are tortured and killed.
No matter what anyone’s opinion of the LGBT community might be, it’s not difficult to understand that this is an atrocity that needs to be pointed out to the world.
