Some Christian right extremists are blaming LGBT people for the destruction brought to Houston and its environs by Hurricane Harvey. Kevin Swanson, the Christian pastor who once recommended that all LGBT people be literally stoned to death, has said that Hurricane Harvey is god’s judgement on cities that have embraced “sexual perversion.”
Kevin Swanson said on his show: “Jesus sends the message home, unless Americans repent, unless Houston repents, unless New Orleans repents, they will all likewise perish. That is the message that the Lord Jesus Christ is sending home right now to America,” he added, Advocate reported.”
Kevin Swanson is a pastor in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and broadcaster from Colorado, known for his condemnation of homosexuality as well as his advocacy of Christian education. He is the director of Generations, a subsidiary of the Christian Home Educators of Colorado, which produces Generations Radio, a daily radio program hosted by Swanson. Swanson is also a writer and producer of The World View in 5 Minutes, a daily Christian newscast.
Swanson, who preaches that the Bible calls for death to LGBT people (although, he says, they should get a chance to repent), said the sins of Houston include having “a very, very aggressively pro-homosexual mayor” (Sylvester Turner, successor to Annise Parker) and “persecuting pastors and churches,” a reference to the city’s delivery of subpoenas (later withdrawn) to some pastors when it was building a defense in a complicated lawsuit involving the now-repealed Houston Equal Rights Ordinance.
According to Right Wing Watch, he added: “If they refuse Jesus, if they continue in their sin, there’s a warning here for them.”
“I think that the entire state of Texas and the entire United States of America needs to take note of this, and realize that there is a God in heaven, He brings His judgments and He calls nations to repentance, as He is doing right now.”
“It’s interesting that the city of Houston, which… apparently there was a very, very, very aggressively pro-homosexual mayor active until 2016.”
“Jesus sends the message home, unless Americans repent, unless Houston repents, they will all likewise perish.”
“That’s the message that the Lord Jesus Christ is sending home right now to America. Is America listening?”
Lesbian Mayorof Houston, Annise Parker insisted it was “more credible” to believe that homosexuality was the cause of the hurricane than climate change.
Parker has since hit back at Coulter’s comments and mocked her.
“I thought no one knew I had a super power over weather,” she quipped.
Coulter wrote on Twitter: “I don’t believe Hurricane Harvey is God’s punishment for Houston electing a lesbian mayor. But that is more credible than ‘climate change’.”
