The actions of NFL players won’t turn the entire tide of the American collective, like Hollywood, politicians, and the media, boast some influence on the psyche of American minds.
Over the weekend, the Steelers decided they would remain inside the locker room during the National Anthem.
“People shouldn’t have to choose,” Coach Mike Tomlin told CBS Sports. “If a guy wants to go about his normal business and participate in the anthem, he shouldn’t be forced to choose sides.”
Every single member of the Pittsburgh Steelers hid in the locker room — except for one.
The war veteran Alejandro Villanueva. He placed his hand over his heart to honor the country he loves – and in doing so he stood in defiance of the National Football League. Alejandro Villanueva is an American hero. Villanueva was a captain and an Army Ranger who served three tours in Afghanistan and received several medals for his service, including the Bronze Star.
The Steelers were reportedly surprised that Villaneuva didn’t stay in the locker room with the rest of the team. According to ESPN, the plan was that the entire team would snub league rules that required on-field presence for the playing of the anthem, and instead stay in the locker room. The logic was that no single player could then be targeted for criticism.
Villanueva had a choice: either respect the football team or respect America. He chose America. He chose country over team. He did what any patriot would’ve done. He did what any veteran would’ve done.
Twitter users on Monday were calling on President Trump to invite Pittsburgh Steelers player Alejandro Villanueva to the White House.
