Shepard Smith: You can’t blame Dems for shutdown when “you’re in charge of everything”

Fox News is not typically known for criticizing Republicans.

On Thursday’s broadcast of Shepard Smith Reporting, the Fox News journalist slammed President Donald Trump and members of the Republican Party who are trying to put the blame on Democrats if there is a government shutdown.

Smith’s comments come as lawmakers are scrambling to pull together legislation to fund the government as the possibility of a shutdown increases before the deadline Friday.

“Back in Washington, there is one discussion: government shutdown,” said Smith. “Of course, with one party in charge of everything, a government shutdown will not happen, right? I mean, never in the history — at least modern history — of the country has there been a government shutdown when a single party is in charge of Washington.”

Smith, continued to take a swipe at the Republican members of Congress. “House, Senate, one party in charge. Republicans have it all. Yet the possibility of a government shutdown has escalated. The problem is really in the Senate,” Smith said.

“The GOP plan was to dare the Democrats to vote against that measure saying we funded the child health insurance program or chip for six years,” he said. “You’re going to vote against children’s health?”

Trump added to the confusion Thursday by tweeting: “CHIP should be part of a long term solution, not a 30 Day, or short term, extension,” appearing to break with GOP leaders, who were clear about the proposal including a longer-term extension for the program.
