USA Today has unleashed in an editorial on Trump, calling him a “uniquely awful” man “unfit to shine the shoes of George W Bush”, describing him as a “uniquely awful” man “not fit to clean the toilets in the Barack Obama Presidential Library”.
That’s the key takeaway from an editorial posted Tuesday (Dec. 12) on the USA Today website under the headline “Will Trump’s lows ever hit rock bottom?”
The paper’s editorial board took issue with the President’s tweet on Tuesday that attacked Democratic senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who has called for him to resign over allegations of sexual misconduct.
“With his latest tweet, clearly implying that a United States senator would trade sexual favours for campaign cash, President Trump has shown he is not fit for office,” USA Today wrote.
“Rock bottom is no impediment for a president who can always find room for a new low.
“And as is the case with all of Trump’s digital provocations, the president’s words were deliberate. He pours the gasoline of sexist language and lights the match gleefully knowing how it will burst into flame in a country reeling from the #MeToo moment.
“A president who would all but call Senator Kirsten Gillibrand a whore is not fit to clean the toilets in the Barack Obama Presidential Library or to shine the shoes of George W Bush.”
USA Today is not known for publishing such blistering editorials. One of the nation’s highest-circulated newspapers, it usually includes an “opposing view” column with each opinion piece. This is not the first time that the editorial board at USA Today has made its views on Trump’s fitness for office known.
In September 2016, the editorial board broke with its long-standing tradition of not endorsing a candidate in presidential elections by penning an editorial entitled “Trump is ‘unfit for the presidency.” It wasn’t so much an endorsement of Hillary Clinton as it was an anti-endorsement of Trump.
