Katy Perry might have been vocal about her stance against President Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election, but now she’s receiving heat for a joke she made about President Barack Obama. The pop star recently dyed her hair blonde, and when a fan told her they preferred her hair black, she said on Instagram Live.
“Oh, someone says, ‘I miss your old black hair,’” the “Firework” singer said in an Instagram video over the weekend. “Oh, really? Do you miss Barack Obama as well? Oh, Okay. Times change. Bye! See you guys later.”
Singer then started laughing and turned around to look at her friends, seemingly searching for their approval on what she viewed as a humorous comment. “I should leave now,” she said. “OK, you’re cut off,” replied a friend off-camera before the livestream came to an end. Perry has since deleted the Instagram video.
The joke, however, did not go over well, with many social media users taking offense to Perry likening her old hairstyle to the first black U.S. president. .One user tweeting: “Wow Katy Perry. The reference to former Pres. Obama was offensive and a poor, tasteless attempt at humor. Your privilege is showing.”(sic). Another Twitter message continued: “It’s been a long time since I cringed as hard as I did when I saw that @katyperry, ‘Do you miss Barrack Obama?’ video.”
“Katy Perry meant she wants Obama back and can’t have him same way ppl want her black hair and won’t get it back… Christ ppl lol,”(sic) a third defended.
Someone else stated: “She was only making a point. Times change and so do people. The joke may have been lame, but the point of the joke was not.”
However, others stuck up for the I Kissed A Girl star, saying it was just an unfortunate joke. Watch video below
