Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, disregarding Justice Department warnings that their actions would be “extraordinarily reckless,” voted Monday evening to release a contentious secret memorandum said to accuse the department and the F.B.I. of misusing their authority to obtain a secret surveillance order on a former Trump campaign associate.
The vote, made along party lines, threw fuel on an already fiery partisan conflict over the investigations into Russia’s brazen meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Republicans invoked a power never before used by the secretive committee to effectively declassify the memo that they had compiled. It was an extraordinary maneuver, cheered on by President Trump, who has repeatedly dismissed the Russia investigation as a “witch hunt” and a sham.
The memo has been a source of escalating partisan tension in Congress. Republicans argue it shows wrongdoing by FBI officials involved in surveillance of a Trump campaign aide, while Democrats say it mischaracterizes intelligence and is an attempt to distract from special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. The memo which was open to all House members to review was read by 190 Republican lawmakers and only 10 Democrats in the last week. Not a single Democrat voted for transparency.
FOX News reported:
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a statement that the committee’s Republicans had “crossed from dangerous irresponsibility and disregard for our national security into the realm of cover up” and “disregarded the warnings of the Justice Department and the FBI.”
“Chairman Nunes’ memo contains significant inaccuracies and omissions that misrepresent the underlying intelligence and jeopardize the effectiveness of our intelligence and law enforcement communities,” Pelosi added.
Minority leader Pelosi then went on CNN and stuttered her way through an interview on the memo.House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) tells CNN’s Chris Cuomo why she is against releasing the GOP memo alleging the FBI abused surveillance law.
Nancy Pelosi: They have made up a memo that isn’t even true. And they’re lying to the American people.
Chris Cuomo: So what are you going to do about it?
Nancy Pelosi: The Republican Party has crossed over to cover up. They’re deadly afraid of the Russia investigation.
Chris Cuomo: Wray, who was recently selected by President Trump, he got the memo. He could have come out and said, ‘This is reckless, don’t release it.’
Nancy Pelosi: With all due respect, you really don’t know what you’re talking about right now!
It was another rough day for Nancy Pelosi. The House Intelligence Committee voted Monday afternoon to release of the secret FISA Memo.
